Dec 20, 2019 · I've heard people in Syracuse who sound like they're from Minnesota. The accent comes from making the mouth very wide, as opposed to the city, where the mouth is very narrow. Words like 'car' and 'coffee' sound very different. To my ear this also the difference between the french Canadian accent compared to Parisian french.

At least from the perspective of someone just across the border in Ontario, upstate NY accents have some very odd sounding vowels indeed. And it's fascinating the way there's such a sharp discontinuity in accents along the border.

Over the past 10 years or so, I've noticed that Southern accents (or at least mild Appalachian drawls) are becoming more prevalent among residens of rural UNY towns that are poorer and more removed from a metropolitan area -- places like Cortland, Waterloo, Seneca Falls, and Bath.

Mar 20, 2021 · Having put my time on the phones for a company serving rural Upstate New York, I think this Southern accent thing is not so much of a thing. Rural farmer accent, redneck accent, yes. It's hit-and-miss in the rural communities. What is interesting to me is the Mennonite accent, which is distinct and has strongly pronounced *r'*s.

Every time I meet somebody from new york, and you can tell they're in New Yorker, I tell him I'm from Buffalo and they laugh at me and call me canadian. Been happening for 30 years now.
