Battery life difference for 5 GHz vs 2.4 GHz WiFi - which is better
Nov 20, 2016 · If you have good 5 GHz coverage and 2.4 GHz coverage in the same area, using 5 GHz is likely as good (if not a bit better) as it will pull faster, then wind down vs. the 2.4 GHz. When coverage starts getting worse for the 5 GHz, but not the 2.4 GHz, you may want to switch to 2.4 GHz for battery reasons. Factors impacting your performance:
Prefer 5GHz over 2.4Ghz without disabling 2.4Ghz
Both use the same SSID, both have 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands enabled. But my Android devices mostly connect the 2.4GHz band – even if I stand next to the router or repeater, and thus the 5GHz signal is quite strong. I want them to prefer the 5GHz band if available (and strong enough), but use the 2.4GHz otherwise.

Jan 16, 2023 · If that is not possible you can try to force your phone to use 2.4 GHz. Some Android versions have a WiFi Frequency Band setting (see Wifi -> three vertical dots -> advanced). If your version has no such setting you can try to use pure physics: Tha maximum range of 5GHz networks is, because of the frequency, smaller than those of 2.4Ghz networks.

Oct 15, 2023 · Notably, 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz have the same name on my network. If I had control over the router, I would create a 5GHz network, and a 2.4 GHz network, and tell my phone to only connect to the 5GHz one. I don't have this luxury, so I want to disable 2.4GHz at the device level.

Jun 25, 2018 · Since upgrading to Nougat 7.0 the tablet now permanently prefers connecting to the faster, but usually weak and spotty 5 GHz networks instead of the slower but much stronger and much more reliable 2.4 GHz networks. They're still fast enough to stream Netflix so they're fast enough for me.
