The Prado Mona Lisa is a painting by the workshop of Leonardo da Vinci and depicts the same subject and composition as Leonardo's better known Mona Lisa at the Louvre, Paris. The Prado Mona Lisa has been in the collection of the Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain since 1819, [1] but was considered for decades a relatively unimportant copy. [2]

This version of the Mona Lisa (Louvre) was painted by one of Leonardo’s pupils. The fact that each pentimento, or change, in Leonardo’s original (to the bust, outline of the veil and position of the fingers) is repeated here suggests that the two works were created simultaneously.

Almost ten years ago, new revelations behind the copy of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa in the Museo del Prado in Madrid came to light. The background, black lacquer instead of the Tuscan landscape of the original, was analyzed and on closer examination, turned out to be overpainting from the middle of the 18th century.
