Authorities in Montana are searching for a killer who is "capable of truly heinous things" as they investigate the death of a man whose friend told police first he may have been the victim of a bear attack.

The Gallatin County Sheriff's Office said in a press release on Tuesday that, upon inspection of the scene, no signs of a bear were present.

Dustin Mitchell Kjersem, 35, was found dead in his tent on Oct. 12. He died after sustaining multiple chop wounds and his death has been ruled a homicide, officials said.

A man recently found his friend’s body and assumed he had been attacked by a bear, only to realize it was far worse than that. Dustin Kjersem hopped in his black F-150 and headed to a remote campsite out in the wilderness of Montana on October 10—the last time anyone would ever hear from him.
