At least 87 people were killed in an Israeli strike overnight Saturday on Beit Lahia in northern Gaza, the enclave’s health ministry said.

Israeli strikes on homes in the northern Gaza Strip overnight and into Sunday left at least 87 people dead or missing, the territory’s Health Ministry said, as a large-scale operation continued against Hamas militants said to be regrouping.

Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry has said at least 87 people were killed and more than 40 injured in Saturday's Israeli air strike on the city of Beit Lahiya in the north of the Palestinian enclave. The ministry said a number of people were still under the rubble after a residential area was hit.

Israel says it is checking reports of casualties but added earlier - lower - figures from Hamas were "exaggerated".
