The Taliban's Foreign Ministry in Kabul did not name the two U.S. citizens, but said they were exchanged for Khan Muhammad, who was arrested in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar two decades ago and has been serving a life sentence in a California prison.
Corbett, who had lived in Afghanistan with his family in 2021 after the collapse of the US-backed govt, was abducted by the Taliban in Aug 2022.
Reports from Nangarhar province indicated that 38 Afghans were released from a Pakistani prison and have returned to Afghanistan after being detained despite holding valid legal documents.
Last week, four people were killed and as many wounded in various incidents across Afghanistan. According to reports, an armed robber was shot dead in a clash with security forces in Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province. A security force member was injured.
