New York Comic Con is underway at the Javits Center in Manhattan. The four-day event kicked off Thursday with panels previewing upcoming movies and TV shows, celebrity appearances and lots of costumes.

What started out as a convention for comic book lovers has evolved into a cultural phenomenon – a convergence of kindred souls from every corner of the cosplay universe. It’s called Comic Con, and the event is taking over the Javits Center in Manhattan from Thursday to Sunday.
