Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a rare neurological disorder where the body’s immune system—which normally protects it from infections and other foreign bodies—mistakenly attacks its own peripheral nerve cells.

Cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) are on the rise, triggering concern among health officials. As of January 29, a total of three GBS-suspected deaths have been reported in West Bengal, with over 120 cases of the rare autoimmune disease detected in Maharashtra.

Barre syndrome outbreak in Pune has crossed the 100 mark with 3 deaths confirmed as of Thursday. The sudden surge in cases has health officials and Pune city authorities concerned as they ramp up surveillance.

The GBS outbreak in Pune and surrounding areas is likely linked to contaminated water sources. Campylobacter jejuni, a bacteria found in contaminated food and water, is believed to be the reason for the outbreak.

In India, more than 100 cases have been reported with hallmarks of this rare neurological disease that can cause paralysis.
