New laws in California make it easier to arrest people for shoplifting and prevent people convicted of theft from entering stores.

Hundreds of new state laws will take effect on Jan. 1, including increased penalties for retail theft and measures to make streets safer for pedestrians.

California’s Proposition 36 was officially enacted over the holiday break, following voters’ overwhelming approval of the initiative aimed at driving down serial theft and fentanyl crimes through harsher prosecution and more aggressive drug diversion policies.

I think the most likely outcome is you’re going to see these (laws) applied differently depending on which county you’re in,” one expert said.
