Have you seen comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS yet? If you haven't yet seen the bright, icy space rock that's traveled from the edge of the solar system, it's not too late. But you need to see it soon.

The Hunter's Moon of October 2024 will be the largest full moon of the year thanks to its proximity to Earth. The moon arrived at perigee, its closest point to Earth in its slightly elliptical, or oval-shaped orbit, on the evening of Wednesday (Oct. 16), coming within just 221,938 miles (357,174 kilometers) of our planet.

A rare celestial event is lighting up the night sky this month as Comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas makes its closest approach to Earth for the first time in roughly 80,000 years.

Get out there just after sunset to see the once-in-a-lifetime Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS Probably as far as most are concerned, Comet Tsuchinshan–ATLAS will put on its best showing in the evening sky during the two-week timeframe beginning Oct.

In addition to the full moon, be sure to look for comet ATLAS in the west. This comet will be visible after sunset, best between 7:15-7:45 pm. The comet is very faint to the naked eye, and is best viewed with binoculars, a telescope, or night mode on your smartphone.

The hunter's moon, the first full moon of fall, will be visible Thursday. It will also be the third consecutive supermoon of 2024. See schedule.

Four telescopes will be set up there by Indira Gandhi Planetarium and UP Amateur Astronomers’ Club. No entry fee will be charged to view the giant moon and planets.
