Paramount's horror-thriller sequel is easily set to win the weekend but still has to contend with competition from indie slasher pic 'Terrifier 3.'

Horror movies topped the domestic box office charts and the Oscar contender “Anora” got off to a sparkling start this weekend.

Paramount Pictures and Temple Hill’s Smile 2 scored an estimated $23m bow to lead the North American box office in a weekend that saw a good hold by Terrifier 3, while Cannes Palme d’Or winner Anora scored the highest per-screen average of 2024 so far.

The box office is ear-to-ear for “Smile 2,” with Paramount’s horror entry landing $9.4 million from 3,619 domestic locations across Friday and preview screenings. That’s above the $8.2 million opening day that the first “Smile” earned in 2022 - a successful kick-off for this sequel,
