The IRS has issued more than 29.6 million individual income tax refunds through Feb. 21, up 2.3% from a year ago.

“Under the law, taxpayers usually have three years to file and claim their tax refunds. If they don’t file within three years, the money becomes the property of the U.S. Treasury,” according to the IRS.

More than 30 million taxpayers across the country are eligible to file their federal tax returns completely free-of-charge this year using Direct File, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has said. Tax season is underway, with the IRS currently accepting payments and returns for 2024. The deadline to file is April 15.

With staffing cuts at the IRS, many taxpayers are concerned about delays in receiving their refunds. Here are some things you can do to avoid a delay.

The median potential refund nationwide is $781 for 2021. Florida, with 69,800 individuals who did not file, is just below the median potential refund at $721. New Yorkers — 73,000 of them — left the most money in the IRS till: $995.

As the April 15 filing deadline looms, the Internal Revenue Service reminds taxpayers that after three years, any unclaimed 2021 tax year refunds go to the U.S. Treasury.
