Macy's released a list of 66 of the "underproductive" stores it is closing. The retailer plans to close about 150 in its revitalization plan.

Macy's is closing 66 stores as part of its "A Bold New Chapter" plan with liquidation sales set to start in January, the retailer confirmed to Axios Thursday. Why it matters: The struggling department store chain is getting smaller as it continues to deal with declining sales.

Roughly 150 Macy's stores will close over the next three years, with these first 66 closures affecting dozens of states in 2025.

In all, 64 Macy's stores in several states, including Florida, New York, California, and Pennsylvania, are set to close, according to a listing of online closures. Most stores are expected to close in the first three months of 2025. The list of closings can be found here.

Retailer will launch clearance sales in January that will run for approximately 8–12 weeks for full-line and small-format stores

Macy’s announced on Thursday that the company is closing dozens of its stores nationwide as part of a “Bold New Chapter” corporate strategy.

The company said the closures of another 66 stores just announced are part of a strategy announced a year ago, designed to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth.

Most of the Macy's (NYSE: M) retail stores are expected to close in the first quarter of 2025, but an exact date was not yet specified for the Mesa store closure. The company said that full-size stores that will close in Q1, including the Mesa location, will start clearance sales in January, and that process will last eight to 12 weeks.
