Macy’s is proceeding with dozens of planned store cuts across the United States, including in the New York City area, as its strategic focus zeroes in on sustainable, profitable growth. The following tri-state stores are among at least 66 “underproductive” locations expected to close in the first quarter of 2025.

Macy’s is closing several dozen stores as part of a previously announced turnaround plan to save the beleaguered retailer.

Macy’s Inc. unveils a list of more than 60 stores slated to close this year as the retailer struggles to right itself amid diminishing foot traffic at remaining stores and breathe new life into its business.

Kohl's says it plans to close 27 of its more than 1,150 locations by April. The 66 locations Macy's announced are among the 150 it's closing as part of its "Bold New Chapter" initiative "designed to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth."

Macy's is closing 66 store locations that it has said are underperforming. The closures are part of the storied retailer's turnaround strategy. The company referred to the brick-and-mortar stores it's shuttering as "non-go-forward" locations.

The closures are part of Macy's "Bold New Chapter" strategy, which was announced in February 2024. The reorganization, the company revealed at the time, involved closing 150 stores nationwide within three years and a pivot to a greater focus on luxury sales.

Macy’s has confirmed they will be closing 66 stores across 22 states, with a majority set to shut their doors during the first quarter of 2025. About half of these are in just four states: New York (9 stores closing),

Macy's Almeda location will close in March, marking the departure of the Almeda Mall's final anchor store and leaving 72 employees out of work.

With Macy's announcing it's closing two Sacramento area stores, one at Sunrise Mall in Citrus Heights, the other in Downtown Commons by the Golden 1 Center, that opens an opportunity downtown.
