Amazon Prime was a latecomer to experimenting with an ad-based platform. Rival Netflix introduced advertising for its cheapest subscription in 12 markets in November 2022. Its $6.99-per-month “Basic with ads” plan offered 720p video without offline downloads and came with some content limits.

Viewers of Prime Video streaming platform in India will have to brace for interruptions from advertisements during shows and movies starting next year as parent Amazon.com Inc. seeks to fund content investments in a fast growing and fiercely competitive market.

Amazon currently includes ads on Prime Video in the US, the UK, Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico and Spain, and gives viewers in those countries the option to pay to continue receiving an ad-free feed.

India, Brazil, Japan, New Zealand and the Netherlands will see advertising added to Prime Video in 2025, joining the U.S., Canada, France, U.K. and Mexico.
