The New Mexico National Guard is continuing search and rescue operations after record rainfall produced severe flooding in and around the city of Roswell and Chaves County.

On Saturday, Roswell received 5.78 inches of rain, breaking the daily record from 1901, according to the National Weather Service.

Authorities have rescued 290 people, and 38 were taken to local hospitals, according to the New Mexico National Guard.

Flooding in New Mexico caused by heavy rainfall over the weekend killed two people, according to officials and authorities, who said hundreds of rescues were performed over Sunday.
