People across much of the UK should be safe to leave their winter layers and umbrellas at home on Christmas Day, as a run of unseasonably mild weather continues. Highs of between 11C and 13C are forecast, lower than the warmest Christmas on record back in 1920 when it was 15.6C in Devon.

As the nation prepares for the big Christmas getaway, travellers in the Midlands have been warned by the Met Office that strong winds and rain are likely to cause disruption. The yellow weather warning predicts gusts of 50-60mph (80km/h-95km/h) across the region on Sunday along with the heavy rain, between midnight and 21:00 GMT.

The weather experts have assured that the conditions "should not play a factor" in causing road disruptions as people journey home for Christmas.
