Two Italian military fighter jets flanked American Airlines Flight 292 as it arrived but the Federal Aviation Administration did not elaborate on what was the security issue aboard the plane.

A source familiar with the situation said the bomb threat towards Flight AA292, which was traveling from New York to New Delhi, was sent via email.

An American Airlines flight out of New York was diverted to Rome on Sunday over a "possible security issue," the airline said in a statement.
